The most exciting ruin bars where you can truly escape the everyday

There is something truly special and almost intangible about the world of ruin bars. Their interiors are an exciting mix of different styles, while their atmosphere brings the past and the present to life at the same time. But what makes a ruin bar truly popular, and which places are definitely worth discovering? In this article, we invite you on a virtual ruin bar tour, where you can gather great ideas if you would like to experience it all in person as well.

The history of ruin bars

It would be difficult to pinpoint exactly when and why ruin bars became so popular. What is certain, however, is that when the first such venues opened in the early 2000s in downtown Budapest mainly in the 7th district, many people viewed this then-novel phenomenon as quite controversial. The concept, however, soon proved successful among both local and international audiences. In fact, many foreign tourists still travel to Budapest specifically to take part in ruin bar tours. Although several of the old, authentic venues have unfortunately closed over the years, new and exciting places continue to appear on the scene.

The secret behind the popularity of ruin bars

Ruin bars are not so easy to describe. These hospitality venues, often created in previously abandoned spaces, perfectly illustrate the saying that the devil is in the details. It is precisely the countless eye-catching or sometimes surprising decorations, furnishings, and accessories that create the eclectic and complex atmosphere that forms the essence and soul of these places. The similarity between the Hungarian words romkocsma (ruin bar) and lomkocsma (junk bar) is more than mere coincidence. In many cases, items collected from various clearance sales or discarded furniture actually become the key elements when designing the interior. The whole experience feels a bit like traveling through time or perhaps even more than that since during a visit you may truly feel as if you have stepped into an entirely different world.

Szatyor Bár

A place where your senses are indulged the moment you step through the door. Among the elements of its interior you will not only find colorful furniture and accessories, but also artworks that are worth admiring over a drink even if you simply wish to sit alone for a while and reflect on your thoughts in this unique setting. The bar owes its name to the ever-joking Frigyes Karinthy. When he once saw the reed-covered interior of the former night bar located in the cellar of the Hadik, he remarked that the place looked just like a szatyor – a shopping bag – and the name has stuck ever since.
