The best beer festivals in Hungary and around the world – plus extra festival tips

Enjoying a good beer with great company is already a fantastic experience—but when all of this takes place at an event dedicated entirely to outstanding beers and an electrifying atmosphere, it’s hard to imagine anyone saying no.

Festival-going is always exciting, and beer lovers are especially lucky, as both Hungary and the wider world offer an incredible range of beer festivals. But where should you go if you want to explore them for yourself? In this article, we take you on a virtual tour through some of the best beer festivals, along with useful tips to help you avoid any unpleasant surprises and make the most of your experience.

The origins of beer festivals

If you thought beer festivals were a product of the modern craft beer revolution, you might be surprised this isn’t quite the case. According to legend, beer brewing competitions and drinking celebrations were already held in ancient Egypt.

In Europe, Germany’s legendary folk festival, Oktoberfest, has been celebrated regularly since 1810. Interestingly, it was not originally centered around beer, but rather horse racing. However, from 1880 onwards, beer sales were officially permitted and unsurprisingly, beer gradually took center stage. Since then, beer-focused festivals have spread rapidly across the world.

What to Keep in Mind When Attending a Beer Festival

Perhaps the most important thing is moderation because the temptation can be hard to resist. 😊 The overwhelming variety and the friendly invitations at each stand make tasting almost irresistible, but unfortunately, this doesn’t increase your body’s tolerance to alcohol.

As we mentioned in our article on alcohol metabolism, the average human body can process approximately 1 gram of alcohol per 10 kilograms of body weight per hour. It’s therefore important to be aware that it’s easy to reach your limits quickly. Taking breaks and pacing yourself between tastings is key.

It’s also worth exploring non-alcoholic options at your favorite breweries’ stands; these often offer surprisingly exciting flavors and creative choices.

Fortunately, beer festivals also feature plenty of delicious food, so don’t miss out on the street food stalls; they’re an essential part of the experience. And finally, dress comfortably, and bring something warm as well: with great beer and good company, the cool evening tends to arrive sooner than you think.
